What is Mahashivratri?
Shivaratri means night of Shiva and Mahashivratri means the great night of Shiva. Mahashivratri is celebrated to honour Lord Shiva. it is believed that day of Mahashivratri is most favorite day of Lord Shiva. On the day of Mahashivratri Shiva was married to Mata Parvati. people worship Shiva on Mahashivratri by keeping fast, it is also believed that people keep fast on Mahashivratri who is being set free from cycle of life and death with Ashirwad of Lord Shiva.

Why Mahashivratri is celebrated?
When Devi Parvati ask Lord Shiva that which is most favorite day the Lord Shiva replied the New Moon of Phalguna month on protein night which is the most favorite day anti that day known as Mahashivratri. there is one story associated with once upon a time hunter went for the hunting on the night of Mahashivratri, he hunted the deer that night but there was too much darkness and he decided to spend his night on the tree, any climb up on the tree when he was climbing on the tree, leaves felt down from the tree on Shivalinga below the tree and he didn't eat something on that day so he was fasting unknowingly. Lord Shiva thought that the hunter offers Beal leaves and fasted for him.
after years pass that Hunter live for a many years, during his time of death Yama sent his doots and that time he realize that is long and Happy living was Prasad of Mahashivratri fast which he kept on that day unknowingly and offered belpatra to Lord Shiva.

How Mahashivratri is celebrated?
Shivalinga is being worshipped whole night and wash every 3 hours with milk, curd, Honey, ghee and water with chanting of Om Namah Shivaya and offering of belpatra on Mantra of Om Namah Shivay is being chanted. on the day of Mahashivratri people visit the temple of Lord Shiva and keep fast on that day and take blessing of lord shiva.
